Dear Parents and Camp Community,
After much thought and heartfelt discussion, we have made the difficult decision to pause our beloved Coastal Camp for the upcoming summer season.
This choice comes from careful reflection on several significant factors:
• Increasing challenges in securing sites and dates
Coastal Camp is reserved through a lottery system that opens each year on January 1. As demand for these sites has grown, it has become harder to secure the locations and dates that work for our program. Planning has become increasingly uncertain, and this year we know we are competing with multiple groups for the same timeframes. Our chances of getting the dates we need are extremely slim.
• Changing weather patterns and warmer summers along the coast
Recent seasons have brought consistently higher temperatures and more extreme weather. Our current setup offers limited flexibility in those conditions. While the location has been beautiful and meaningful, the heat and weather shifts have made it more difficult to support the comfort, health, and rhythm of camp life.
• A noticeable rise in tick activity
We have observed a clear increase in ticks both in the region and around camp. Combined with weather and site challenges, this has affected our ability to offer the grounded, nature-immersive experience that is core to Coastal Camp. The space we have been in, although deeply cherished, no longer offers the shade, quiet, and rootedness we want for our campers.
All of this has led us to step back and imagine what Coastal Camp might become in a new home — one with more trees and seclusion, a stronger sense of being held by the land, and the right infrastructure to support our vision. We are hopeful and excited about this next chapter, but we also recognize that finding the right place will take time. Rather than stretch the camp beyond what feels right or plan too close to summer, we know that pausing for a year is the most thoughtful and responsible choice.
We warmly welcome your ideas and suggestions: state parks, private land, campgrounds, retreat centers, or hidden gems that might be a good fit. Our essential needs are space, bathrooms, drinking water, and access to a place to swim, ideally with a covered gathering area. Cabins and other structures are certainly a plus. We hope to remain near our current region, but we are open to exploring nearby states and new landscapes that might allow Coastal Camp to truly flourish.
Our hope, and our intention, is that this is a pause, not an ending. When Coastal Camp returns, we want it to do so in a setting that reflects the spirit of the program: grounded, vibrant, immersed in nature, and deeply connected to the land and one another.
With gratitude and hope,
The Adventure Camps Team
